About us

The Daily Counterfeit was founded in 1865 by the editor and publisher of The Economist, Robert Cope, after he realized that many of the headlines on the paper were genuine but that the headline writers seemed to be lying. The Counterfeit Daily was the third biggest newsoutlet of all time and was sold in nearly 100 countries. It had the highest circulation of any major news agency in world history, but the story behind its success was Cope’s own attempts to break a Guinness World Record with a fake fake.

Cope, an Irish-born American, became obsessed after he ran a story of another fake, which he then sent to a colleague, who in turn sent it to The Daily Mirror newspaper. However, the Mirror never published the fake, which sparked the interest of David Willetts, a London-based journalist who decided to create the Counterfeit Daily Counter. It was Willetts who was the first to establish an institution dedicated to producing fake news online in 2006 and launched his own counter-fictional website earlier this year.
